China down South Africa 3-1 to lift trophy
China's Yu Hai(R2) heads home the first goal.

China's youth team grabbed a rare international soccer title after defeating host South Africa 3-1 to lift the Sesol Cup on January 15, 2006.

The early victory in the new year will inject some vigor to the doldrums of Chinese soccer, who suffered an early exit last year at group stage of 2006 World Cup qualifications.

China, with an unbeaten records in group matches, entered the final after knocked out Mozambique with a 4-1, while South Africa edged C?te d'Ivoire with a penalty shoot after drawing the game 0-0.

China were invited to the eight-team tournament with the rest seven all from Africa. China and South Africa were in the same group.

Midfielder Yu Hai headed home the first for China twenty-six minutes into the game with a freekick from Cui Peng, only to see South Africa leveled back five minutes later as Chinese defenders failed to block a cross from the left.

China set up their advantage ten minutes before the final, as midfield Zhang Wenzhao powered in a 14-meter-shoot in a counter attack.. China enlarged result to 3-1 six minutes later as forward Yang Yu lashed in a Zhang Wenzhao cross.

Goalkeeper Wang Dalei blocked out a penalty during the injury time as defender Yang Shanping fell the ground with hand touching the ball.
